Barão de Forrester

Come and meet a mythical, adventurous and innovative character that marked the history of Porto Wine and left a legacy that can still be experienced today in the Offley Porto Wine Cellars.
Joseph James Forrester, a Scot whom the King Ferdinand II made Baron in 1855, devoted much of his life to the development of Porto and Douro wines, and played a key role in the international expansion of Porto Offley, of which he had become a partner in the early thirties of the nineteenth century.

Responsible for a strategy of great importance for the growth of international Porto Wine trade, Forrester was the first to map the river and the Douro Valley, a work that earned him the recognition and admission into several societies of Geography and of European Arts, in addition to the title of Baron, for the first time attributed by the Portuguese Crown to a foreign citizen.

Also noteworthy are the Baron de Forrester's deep researchs on viticulture - particularly on the soil, the traditional grape varieties and the plagues that affected the Douro region in the 19th century - whose results still represent a benefit to the Porto Wine industry.
